Meet the Models
Clean is based on the 'Brilliant' channel of a classic amp from the '60s. This amp was widely used by guitarists of the British Invasion.
Boost is based on the 'Tremolo' channel of the same amp, and is great for edgy rock riffs.
Blues is based on a '70s-era guitar amp with a bright character. This classic amp is popular with country, rock and blues guitarists.
Rock is modeled after a classic 45 watt amp from the '60s. This is perhaps the best known rock amp of all time.
Lead is based on the 'Modern' channel of a high-gain amp popular with metal guitarists.
Heavy is based on the 'Vintage' channel of the same amp and is also ideal for metal and grunge sounds.
Bass is modeled after a rare PA from the '70s which has become popular with bass players due to its strong low end and 'fuzz' at high volumes.
Cabinet is a separate effect that provides a selection of classic guitar cabs, with optimized mics and mic positioning.

After these written explanations watch the video tutorial below on setting up the amp with a cabinet system with multiple virtual microphones that are simulated to be near and far away. Then we will map them to a macro knob to be able to simulate moving the audio signal strength between the two incoming audio chains.
In the video tutorial below I will be using the Guitar Pack from ableton.com (free for suite owners and highly recommended), but the resulting audio effect rack / chain will work equally well with live guitar signals being run through it!!
First we need to understand more about Ableton’s Amp and Cabinet devices.
Ableton’s Amp
Amp is an effect that emulates the sound and character of seven classic guitar amplifiers. Developed in collaboration with Softube, Amp uses physical modelling technology to provide a range of authentic and usable amplifier tones, with a simple and consistent set of controls.

There are seven amp models to choose from:
- Clean is based on the ”Brilliant” channel of a classic amp from the ’60s. This amp was widely used by guitarists of the British Invasion.
- Boost is based on the ”Tremolo” channel of the same amp, and is great for edgy rock riffs.
- Blues is based on a ’70s-era guitar amp with a bright character. This classic amp is popular with country, rock and blues guitarists.

Amps & Cabinets
Guitar amps are designed to be used with accompanying speaker cabinets. For this reason, Amp comes with a companion effect called Cabinet which is designed to be used after Amp in a device chain. If you’re looking for authenticity, we recommend this signal flow. But you can also achieve interesting and exotic sounds by using Amp and Cabinet independently.
Cabinets
Cabinet is an effect that emulates the sound of five classic guitar cabinets. Developed in collaboration with Softube, Cabinet uses physical modelling technology to provide a range of authentic sounds, with optimized mics and mic positioning.
The Process of Making the Clean Guitar Rig with Amp & Cabinets
Step 1 : the two chain audio effect rack
First we need to set up the two chain audio effect rack. I have already covered this in a tutorial, earlier this week in fact. Go here to download the rack, or better yet watch the video tutorial on how to make it!
The download will be set up as dry and wet chains, but you simply need to rename them to Far and Near respectively.
Step 2 : the far microphone cabinet
On the chain you labeled as far drop the default cabinet audio effect.
Set up the device as follows
- Speaker – 4 x 12 ( four 12 inch speakers )
- Microphone – Far
- Condensor
- Output – Mono
- Dry / Wet at 100%
Step 3 : the near microphone cabinet
Near Cabinet
On the chain you labeled as near drop the default cabinet audio effect.
Set up the device as follows
- Speaker – 1 x 12 ( one 12 inch speakers )
- Microphone – Near Off-Axis
- Dynamic
- Output – Mono
- Dry / Wet at 100%
Step 4 : Map the pan control to the Macro Control
Now, if you downloaded the rack mentioned earlier, or followed along with the tutorial you should already have the chain selector mapped to macro 1. Now you want to map the pan controls for both chains to Macro 1 as well.
Then go into map mode
- On the Far pan minimum and maximum go from C to 39
- One the Near pan minimum and maximum go from 40 to C
Step 5 : Add an Amp Device
Now you want to take the Clean Amp preset and drop it in front of the cabinet system fx rack. The parameters are pretty easy to set up.
*NOTE: You can use any amp here, start with any of the presets of the AMP device if you are using this rack for distortion or a bass guitar for example. There are quite a few great presets that would worked perfectly with this Rack.
- gain – 5
- bass – 5.5
- mid – 5
- treble – 6
- presence – 5.35
- volume – 6
- dry / wet – 75%
Step 6 : Adding Extra Effects
Ableton Live 10 Free Download
Here is where you can add some icing on the cake. For simplicity’s sake I used two presets and a limiter!
- EQ 8 Preset Called E. Guitar 1
- Reverb Preset Called Bright Reverb
Step 7 : Making the Final Effects Rack
Here you just need to select all the new audio effects, including the cabinet rack, and group them together. Then get to mapping useful and meaningful parameters.
What I mapped to the 8 Main Macros
- The Cabinet Selector from the Cab. Rack
- Limiter Gain
- EQ 8 Scale
- Reverb Dry / Wet
- Amp – Low
- Amp – Mid
- Amp – High
- Amp – Dry / Wet
